OUR HISTORY

The Wildlife Trust Alliance was launched in Bangalore, India, in January 2004 to:
  • Provide a strong, unified voice for local conservation leaders at international conservation forums;
  • Develop a way for these respected conservation leaders to act as catalysts for change in our understanding and practice of conservation;
  • Serve as a resource for policy makers, fellow scientists, educators and the media.
  • Influence international policy agendas;
  • Conduct cooperative research into the links between man-made environmental change, health and biodiversity conservation;
  • Empower lasting, local conservation by developing practical, multidisciplinary programs at model sites around the world;
  • Build a cadre of professional conservation scientists in developing nations.

The Alliance is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of one representative from each Alliance organization, plus two co-ordinators: Claudio Padua, science director of Brazil’s Institute for Ecological Research and Andrew Taber, Wildlife Trust’s Executive Vice President of Programs. The Alliance is convened by Mary Pearl, president of Wildlife Trust. Ms. Yolanda Kakabadse serves as Councillor to the Alliance. She is the former President of IUCN and former Minister of the Environment for Ecuador.
