What Have We Learned from Swine Flu?

The American media circus has moved on, the drugstores are taking down the "H1N1 Vaccinations Available Here" signs, and most people have moved on. Like SARS, avian flu and Hantavirus, swine flu is yesterday's scare.

Call to Action for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Platform Explosion

The Deepwater Horizon oil platform explosion in the Gulf of Mexico was a human tragedy and has become an on-going environmental catastrophe, with no end in sight. Thousands of barrels of oil continue to spill into the ecosystem daily, in an area that supports half of the wetlands in the continental United States.

When swine-origin H1N1 influenza virus swept the globe last year, sickening millions and killing thousands, it stirred controversy and confusion over how a virus could have been transmitted from pigs to humans.

Hitching a Ride on Wild Birds to Study Avian Flu

In Bangladesh, wild ducks are leaving waterways to summer in China, Mongolia, and Siberia. But before the ducks take flight, researchers organized by Wildlife Trust and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations are testing the birds for avian flu, and tagging birds with satellite transmitters.

One Health for One World

The notion that one health perspective can save lives is valuable and realistic. Specifically, the "One Health" perspective that incorporates human, domestic animal, wildlife, and ecosystem health has the potential to lead to effective solutions and save many lives. Wildlife Trust's formation of the One Health Alliance of South Asia (OHASA) works to address these issues.

Meet the Scientist: Dr. Peter Daszak

Dr. Peter Daszak talks about the threat new pathogens pose to endangered species and goes into detail about his discovery of chytridiomycosis, a fungal disease responsible for global amphibian population declines. Dr. Daszak also discusses a unique study that exposes how the W.H.O. might better use their resources when faced with new pathogens such as the recent outbreak of the H1N1 virus.
