Monitoring Right Whales Off the Coasts of South Carolina and Georgia

Funded by: NOAA Fisheries

The endangered North Atlantic right whale migrates to the Southeast U.S. each winter to give birth to their calves.  This region is the only know calving ground for the species.  The calving grounds off Georgia and northern Florida have been designated as a critical habitat for right whales, but recent survey efforts have suggested that some right whales utilize areas further north as well, including northern Georgia and South Carolina.  The purpose of monitoring right whales using aerial surveys provides more extensive information to managers of right whale calving distribution to ensure protection and recovery of the species.  Wildlife Trust is filling an important data gap that continues to provide keen insight into preferred winter habitats for the right whale.
